KINEMATIC ALIGNMENT VS. ROBOT-ASSISTED FUNCTIONAL ALIGNMENT: THEORETICAL-PRACTICAL FOCUS ON PERSONALIZED ALIGNMENTS IN TKA – 19 JUNE 2026

This course aims to deepen the theoretical and technological evolution of Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA), with a specific focus on personalized alignment strategies.

Through a scientific and practical comparison between Kinematic Alignment (KA) and Robot-Assisted Functional Alignment (FA), participants will acquire advanced knowledge of the most recent surgical approaches oriented toward treatment individualization.

Throughout the course, the following topics will be addressed:

  • theoretical and biomechanical principles of Kinematic Alignment and Functional Alignment;
  • clinical indications, limitations, and advantages of different alignment strategies;
  • the role of robotic surgery in improving accuracy, reproducibility, and functional outcomes;
  • planning techniques and intraoperative decision-making;
  • practical application of the methods through re-live surgery sessions and dry lab training.

The educational approach will integrate up-to-date scientific evidence, clinical case discussions, and hands-on experiential activities, promoting immediate translation into daily clinical practice.

The course is intended for:

  • Orthopaedic and Traumatology surgeons;
  • orthopaedic surgeons interested in knee arthroplasty;
  • professionals wishing to deepen their knowledge of personalized alignment techniques in TKA and robot-assisted surgery.

Admission requires a Medical Degree with specialization in Orthopaedics and Traumatology, or enrollment in a related residency program.

The course will take place in person on 19 June 2026 at the CU.BO Building – Simulation Center of Università Campus Bio-Medico di Roma, Via Regdo Scodro, 42, Roma.

The program will include:

  • frontal lectures;
  • scientific presentations and interactive discussions;
  • re-live surgery sessions;
  • dry lab hands-on training at the Simulation Center.

Practical activities will be organized in two stations:

Station 1 – Unrestricted Kinematic Alignment

Tutors:

  • Edoardo Franceschetti
  • Stefano Campi
  • Pietro Gregori
  • Giancarlo Giurazza

Hands-on practice on saw bones knees.

Station 2 – Robotic-Assisted Functional Alignment with MAKO

Tutors:

  • Sebastien Lustig
  • Luca Andriollo
  • Christos Koutserimpas
